Fallout

Fallout is a 2.5 dimensional point and click RPG game. It is the first of the series of Fallout spinoffs which has a since-fiction post nuclear storyline. The adventure begins when the fallout shelter which has been keeping them safe, Vault 13, faced a water supply problem due to a broken filter. The main character controlled by the player is the one sent out to the outside world of wastelands to find a solution.

Interestingly enough he encounters mutated creatures such as odd looking two-headed brahmins which are relatively harmless unless provoked by an attack.

Even by attacking a innocent passerby might provoke the entire community of villagers against you whereby you will either have to fight them or retreat to a different location. All your actions will depend whether you will be a goodie or baddie, determined by the Karma level attained as you progress in the game. A very low Karma (such as being known as 'Childkiller') will set a group of bounty hunters against you. However a good reputation such as being known as a 'Champion' will enable you to converse with people more easily. Experience points is still awards for all successful combat acts carried out. Stealth can be used to avoid combats.

Zombies or rather, mutated inhabitants roaming around.

Red circles under the creatures indicate that they are initiated in combat against you. The red dots in the lower screen is the action point system calculating the number of moves you have.

Since it is a turn based game which uses an action point system. This means certain moves will take up more points to carry out and when your turn is done, it's the enemy's turn to make a move in combat.

The protagonist is given the PipBoy 2000 which is a device that can toggle between maps, objectives and bookkeeping of past events and skill levels.

You can 'spend' accumulated character points to upgrade the skills of your choice.

One anoying aspect of the game is the night time mode when darkness falls on the wasteland and sight is limited to within a short circumference around the character and also inhabitants will retreat to their homes which becomes inaccessible at night.

The game also has hilarious conversation with NPCs which keeps it entertaining such as trying to bed some of the female characters.

Despite being a predecessor of the 3D Fallout 3, this game gives a significantly different experience from the newer series.

Fallout 3

Fallout 3 is a fully immersive strategic RP game where the player controls the main character who grew up in a fallout shelter. As he grew up he explores the outer world which is filled with hostilities in a post apocalyptic earth where enemies i.e. humans, zombies, critters, mutants, etc roam around.

Enemy. Pip Boy 3000 allos you to choose the spot which offers the most critical hit.

Post apocalyptic setting.

The background is impressive and large as you navigate through different areas and towns in the game, from underground to above ground environments. However the Pip Boy 300 is a device which is somewhat like a PDA for your character to navigate through the game, check inventories, check the vital stats of your player, the game accomplishments and objectives that are yet to be fulfilled.

The audio aesthetics is superb with realistic panning depending on the location of the enemies which made me shocked at times to suddenly hear a growl or attack from behind or the sides which is also shift and blur the camera view from the impact.

Talking to Jericho- given a choice to form allies.

Interactions which other human characters through the game will affect the game outcome. For example being given a choice of response in conversations might determine if that person will be kind or cold towards your character which might hamper or alleviate your progress through the game. You can even form allies through conversations thus depending on your communication skills which is shown in the 'stats' section of the Pip Boy 300, a character with high charm level would have an added advantage in this area.

Pip Boy 300 showing the skills the player has.

One of the best RPG games i've played which is addicted and challenging. No negative sides to it that i can think of but not being able to search for items to complete a quest might be frusting and time consuming at times.

Torture Game 3

http://www.keepbusy.net/play.php?id=the-torture-game-3

Sadistically dismembering a 3D guy might be a good stress reliever at times *evil grinz*. Otherwise it might just be entertaining for those who like horror and macabre theme.

The man is hung via his wrists with ropes. Weapons are provided such as razor, gun, rope, chainsaw, spikes or even stretch him out by using the hand tool. U can also brush paint on him which is a form of humiliation.

After he is all butchered up and there are body parts lying on the floor, the screen can be restarted by clicking on the 'reset' key.

What i like about this game is the ability to control the weapons by using the keyboard such as up and down keys to length on shorten the rope. It feels somewhat like a paint or photoshop application except the outcome is unexpected and you get a different result everytime =)

The physics of the game makes it engaging in the way the body bounces, sways and even wiggles from the pain of the tension from the rope.

It is deviates from other mainstream conventional games that are child friendly.

Yet i feel it addresses the issue of violence in most games that people indulge in. The game isolates and focuses on the violent element like those in shooting and combat games.

It is a unique game, and in the end u can have a screenshot of your very own torture masterpiece.

Critter Lite

Critter Lite is a demo version or Critter Crunch game for IPhones or Ipods. Players control Biggs who is the adorable orange creature at the bottom of the screen.

Simply slide or drag Bigg left/right to the desired position under the columns of critters and slide upwards to activate his tongue which with capture the critter into his mouth. Release the critters at the desired location again by using the same controls to move him left and right and slide upwards to release the critter.

The point of the game is to clear all the critters within the time given of gain enough points to level up by bursting the critters. The critters have to be fed into each other meaning there are 3 distinctive sizes of critters i.e. large medium and small. Only small critters can be fed to medium critters and medium critters to large ones.

It is an entertaining and easy to play casual game with cute sound effects as well. There is also a puzzle mode where the number of moves is limited and you are supposed to clear all the critters in the screen. It also reminds me of the arcade game, 'Puzzle Bobble' whereby bursting color coordinated critters will gain you more points.

The game is also esthetically pleasing with colorful backgrounds which varies in every level.

Parachute Ninja: Iphone/Ipod Game

Parachute Ninja

This game'splot revolves around a family that was destroyed by fire started by an enemy and the protagonist remains as the only survivor as he goes through several levels that reveals the story. He then goes in search of his only relative, Master Yo. The truth is then revealed to him that his father was the keeper of a special scroll that holds the secret to a special kind o power. He has to become a ninja to stop his enemies evil plans and seek revenge.

In the game the character appears more like a bouncy ball dressed in a ninja outfit.

What makes the game fun is its controls which simulates the flinging of the ninja just like a catapult or slingshot. Tilting the Iphone/Ipod left and right will affect his direction.

Interesting elements adds on to the physics of the game such as fans which which make the ninja fly upwards or sideways depending on its direction. There are also bouncy trampolines, parachutes, etc. Fireflies are meant to be collected to increase scores. Failing to land on a safe space for e.g. falling into the water, hitting spikes and enemies will make you lose points.

Although the controls are simple, it gets challenging when the parachute ability is activated as the tilt accelerometer is very sensitive and you'd tend to fly further than expected.

Overall the graphics are cute and the game that is fun and easy to play.

Battle Bugs

This is a classic game launched in 1994 that ran in DOS yet it is a very memorable game for me even though I played it when I was about 7yrs old. It is a real time strategy game whereby you control bugs wearing military outfit to gain territory and food pieces and eradicate enemy insects controlled by a 2nd player or computer AI.

The view is isometric and occurs in household locations such as kitchen counters whereby there will be food pieces lying around. You win the game by getting insects on the food pieces long enough whereby they will then plant flags to mark their territory. Upon succeeding, you will then proceed to the next campaign at a new location. Enemies are attacked by throwing bombs and different insects in the army such as ants, beetles, spiders or cockroaches will have varying strengths and abilities such as defense.

And interesting fact is that the game covers is a spoof of "Raising the Flag in Iwo Jima".

I think that the game is conceptually very interesting and humorous at the same time which makes it a great classic game back in the days.

Soosiz: iPhone/iPod Game

This is the most dizzying game I've ever played due to its gravity defying platforms which allows you to literally walk on the underside of the planet. The controls are simple... touch the left/right or jump icons to activate the respective moves. You'll need to collect coins, save 'buddies' and kill enemies by jumping on top of them, pretty much like super mario.

Additional physics in the game includes jumping on a trampoline to get to greater heights and walking on thin vines. Each level begins with three lives and going off platform or not landing anywhere will cost you a life as well as being injured by enemies.

The level design is good with directions to guide you through like arrow sign and you can even click on the magnify icon to zoom out and see where you should be heading. Understandably these are important elements in the game as without them, it could get even more confusing to a point of vomit-inducing dizziness.

Despite the rave reviews, my personal opinion on this game is not so good. Graphics are average, the background music is a bit 'off' as it doesn't match the environment and even the story line about saving the earth is not really felt in the gameplay.

Game Review 4: Nightmare before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge

This game is based on the Tim Burton's Nightmare Before Christmas movie for PS2 as a 3D action horror game. The main character being controlled is Jack Skellington. When he left Halloween Town, 3 mischvious ghosts, Lock, Shock and Barrel started to cause chaos in the town by bringing Oogie, the evil enemy, back to existence and take revenge on Jack for banishing him in the first place.

His character can toggle between 3 types as you progress through the game i.e. the original Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King, Santa Jack n his normal self. Each of his alter ego has different combat abilities such as the 'soul robber' whipper, throwing flames and throwing gifts.

Ghosts and evil spirits are present at discoveries of new locations and are relatively easy to defeat. At the end of every level, there will be a major battle scene to fight the Lock, Shock and Barrel trio or the huge Oogie himself. And the challenge is upped during the music based battles when players have to press the keys shown following the music to increase Jack's powers to attack which gets difficult and frustrating as this is the part where the battle is always lost and the whole fight scene is restarted again.

The music used accompanies the game well for all the scenes and adds a lot of quirkiness for example during the Battle of Lock, Shock and Barrel, the music has them singing as though they are taunting Jack in a very mischievous manner and Jack trying to get them to obey him. Together with the great animations it is really entertaining to play as it gives players a cinematic experience.

Game Review 3: Poupee Girl

This is an avatar dress up site which has become the obsession of females interested in fashion or shopping.

The site is @ http://pupe.ameba.jp .

'Poupee' actually means doll in French thus this is somehow a digitalized, more techy version of the paper doll dress up cutouts girls used to play but with wayyy more functions, capabilities and interactions.

I'd consider it a game as members/players are driven to collect enough ribbons, the currency the use, so that they are able to buy items to dress their dolls up.

And how do they get ribbons? By uploading real photos of their clothes, accessories, makeup items etc which will then be voted by other members. So ribbons will be collected from uploading pics, getting votes and selling avatar items... OR even by paying real money.

Sometimes you will find shells at random places such as the doll room and once 5 are found or bought from the marketplace, they can be thrown at the Shell Spring to get a surprise dress up item of varying values.

Poupee Town shows all the places you can visit such as clothes shops, the marketplace where real-time haggling of dress up items occur, cafe where you can see other avatars who are online at the cafe, the amusement (a game where you will control a bird to avoid contact with balloons to win items), Beauty Poupee (kinda like a plastic surgery place where the features of your doll can be modified by paying ribbons), etc.

The front page will show your poupee doll, the list of friends, favorite items, calendar and message updates.

This game allows interaction with other payers so it encourages communication and binds people with similar interests.

There is a daily cute ranking which is updated daily to show the most popular items that received the most number of votes for the day.

An item that received lots of votes.

This is the dress up contest winner for that session. The contest is held at different schedules and contestants compete for votes.

The drawback of this game is that some parts of the website are in Japanese characters and you'll just have to guess what's happening. Even some of the English they use are confusing probably due to direct translation. Some messages by users are in Japanese so you'll have to use a translator generator. However this is understandable considering the origin of the game. And you'll most probably get the hang of the system after some time.

Game Review 2: Harvest Moon A Wonderful Life (2004)

Kawaii neh?

Harvest Moon is a 3D life/farm simulation/RPG originally conceptualized by a Japanese gamemaker, Yasuhiro Wada, in 1996 and since have generated a whole line of Harvest Moon series.

The one I'll be reviewing is 'A Wonderful Life' for PS2.

I like how the environment, called 'Forget-Me-Not-Valley' follows a serene Japanese countryside setting which is affected by seasons that will change the species of plants that can be found and the kind of crops that can be grown by the main character- a boy who inherited the farm after the death of his father.

Crops have to be sown and grown, life-stock reared and bred, pets cared for, building relationships with people, etc.

Sometimes pleasant surprises will prop up such as the hens laying golden eggs which could be sold for a lot of money, the cows producing top grade milk, attaining gold wool from the sheep, meeting new interesting people, new births of the farm animals (in which they can be named) and the main character could even get married to a babe of his choice from his countryside and...

Make Baby!

These other NPCs (non-player characters) such as the life-stock/people will also mature over time. Death of some of the villagers will occur and even to the main character at the end of the game storyline/chapter which will then unlock a free-play mode.

Some screenshots of the game:

Let's work hard today! ;)

Fishing requires some experience and skill on the players part cos the fish won't be caught if it's reeled in too fast. The species of fishes caught varies and sometimes rare ones will fetch more money.

Even cows need to be treated with TLC.

Night time reveals some magical plants at particular locations which can interacted with.

Special pen for a newborn cow.

Drawback: The environment is really large and traveling around it feels kinda slow once I'm familiar with the environment (though the character is running). But i guess this is the problem not specific to Harvest Moon and that most RPGs will have the same effect once the player is familiar with the environment.

Other than that it is truly an immersive game for me and I like being in this fantasy world of farm life.
